The railway line from Fort William to Mallaig passes through what I consider to be the most beautiful country in all Scotland. Four or five miles westwards from the head of Loch Eil one comes all of a sudden into Glen Finnan. It is a deep, wooded glen shut in by very high hills.
The Prince’s Monument stands as a silent, gaunt reminder of the day, August 19th 1745, when the standard was raised to strike a last blow for the Stuarts.
I have never seen anything so beautiful as Loch Shiel in the sunshine of an early June morning.
